Crater 2 is a bituminous gear lubricant for use in the rail industry. It is formulated to provide a durable lubricating film that offers long-term gear protection.
Crater 2 is specially designed to lubricate the traction motor gear cases of diesel and electric locomotives, and was originally developed in this application for British Rail. It can be used for both solid and resilient gears.
The extremely tacky nature of Crater 2 necessitates the packaging of these products in sealed one-pound polyethylene bags. The sealed bags are to be added to the top opening of the traction motor gear case. Because the whole bag is added to the gear case, waste is minimized. Otherwise, normal handling procedures should be observed as with any petroleum based products.
